Windsor Castle

History

Windsor castle, also known as the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world, was built in 1066 by William the Conqueror after the Norman invasion of england.  Windsor castle was the final resting place to 11 Monarchs. The Castle grounds cover a total of 13 acres and was designed to be a fortress, palace and village. Windsor Castle has been home to a long list of monarchs throughout the last 900 years since it was built.  Particularly Queen Elizabeth throughout her final years as the Monarch. The castle was originally built as a motte and bailey, but the goal of a surrounding moat would never be used due to a faulty design which allowed water to escape from it consistently.

St. Georges Chapel

St. Georges Chapel was orginally constructed under King Edward IV in the late 15th century.  The chapel has been home to numerous royal weddings including Harry and Meghan and many other members of the royal family.  The chapel plays a significant role in the history of the monarchy and is the location of which many royals are burried including queen elizabeth II.

Royal Jubilees

WIndsor castle is home to numerous royal celebrations including Queen Elizabeth II's golden jubilee in 2002, queen Victorias jubilee in 1897 and many more.  The Jubilee's are hosted to celebrate a monarch's reign for 50 plus years and boasts parades and public gatherings at the castle.

English Civil War

WIndsor castle played a massive role in the english civil war of 1642.  The castle was a stronghold for King Charles I in which he could coordinate his military strategy for the war.  charles staying in the castle provided strength and a perspective that the Monarch and his supporters could rally together and be represented with unity and strength.

Films

WIndsor castle has been represented in various films over the past hundred years.  Some notable films include Oscar winning film "the Kings Speech", "The Queen" and "Harry Potter and the order of the Pheonix".  While these films are only the tip of the inceberg, Windsor Castle has been used for its beatiful architecture and depicts and authentic, royal setting for these films and was used as an outline for Hogwarts school of magic in Harry Potter. 

Television

WIndsor Castle has also been a very prominent filming grounds for various natable television series. Some series include "Victoria", "my week with Marilyn" and the most notable being the netflix series "the crown".  Primarily The great hall and library were used to film this series. With enourmous amounts of history and a simply beautiful property, Windsor Castke has been a diesirable ground for filming for many years and many more to come. 

News Coverage

Windsor Castle has been home to various royal announcemnts and highly covered events in the media.  Some notable events include the announcement of the birth of Harry and Meghans newborn son, Archie.  This announcement was followed by a Christenting ceromony for archie. The Castle was also home to Queen Elizabeths annual chritmas broadcast during the period in which she stayed there.

Final Points

WIndsor Castle is an iconic landmark that holds a tremendous amount of history.  From its close ties to westminister abbey, to being the final resideing location of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Windsor castle holds and immence connection to historical events dating back to the 9th century and several ties to the modern media in the U.K. With a variety of films and televiosn series placed here it is cemented to be one of the most beautufl and convienient sets in the world.
